Gary Pocock - CEO of Hornbeam Academy Trust



Gary Pocock is the Chief Executive Officer of a Hornbeam Academy Trust which is a Multi-Academy Trust in East London and Essex. The Trust is an approved sponsor.

He has worked in Schools and Education for over 30 years, including mainstream and special schools. Gary has worked as a Headteacher and Executive Headteacher of special schools in Essex, Waltham Forest and Havering. Before moving to MAT leadership, Gary worked as a Local Authority Senior Officer for a large county council where he was responsible for all services to support children with SEND and Additional Needs including Educational Psychology, Specialist Teachers, Alternative Provisions, Education Welfare and CAMHS Tier 2. His experience covers all categories of Special Educational Needs from 2 – 19.

Gary has a first degree in Psychology, a Master's degree in Education and a post-graduate Advanced Diploma in Special Educational Needs. In January 2017 Gary joined the fast-track programme to train as an Ofsted Lead Inspector, and inspects schools in the London Region.

Julie Tyler - Director of Finance & Resources



Having worked in private practise for 22 years, Julie joined a large secondary school in 2002. Experienced with Finance, Site and HR, she Project Managed the largest solar installation of any public building whilst maintaining the day to day financial management of the school. After 7 years she joined Essex Council supporting and advising 30 schools on finance and governance. In 2011 she joined the William Morris School which, within a year, with Brookfield House School, formed the Hornbeam Academy Trust. In her current role she supports the Trust with financial planning and financial results whilst working with the individual Academies to ensure the resources are available to provide the best outcomes for our pupils.

Ian Hogg - Associate Principal Schools Improvement



Ian Hogg is Associate Principal for Leadership Development. His role includes coaching and mentoring Principals and Deputy Principals in all the Trust’s schools, leading the Trust on quality marks such as the Rights Respecting School Award and Investors in People and providing specialist HR support.

Ian was previously Deputy CEO of Hornbeam Academy Trust, Head of School at Brookfield House School and Executive Principal at Dycorts School. He has 36 years’ experience of teaching and managing in mainstream and special schools and local authority SEND services.

Ian has a first degree specialising in Psychology, a Master’s degree in Leadership & Management in Schools and achieved the National Professional Qualification for Headship.

Kate Hufton - Associate Principal Educator Development



Kate was a teacher /curriculum leader in several schools in Essex and Redbridge for 28 years. She has taught SEN classes, Design and Technology, Textiles and Food. She then became a Senior Lecturer at the University of East London, where she trained Secondary and Primary teachers for 7 years and was involved with schools training mentors to support teachers.

During this time she has worked with Public Health England and was involved in the development of the new Eatwell guide, as well as the Jamie Oliver Foundation and the British Nutrition Foundation on research projects which have resulted in publications on the Government website - A framework for Food teaching in Primary and Secondary Schools and most recently FELL - Food Education Learning Landscape, which has focussed on the current position related to Food Education in this country. She is currently a member of the Education working group for the British Nutrition Foundation.

Kate joined Hornbeam Academy Trust in September 2017 as Associate Principal for Educator Development. Her main role is to support all the principals, teaching and support staff across the Trust with training to ensure they are up to date with curriculum developments and developing the right skills to support the pupils they are working with.

Mielie Jonker - Associate Principal ICT Data and Performance



Mielie Jonker is Associate Principal: Data and Performance.

His role includes supporting Principles in Data Management and Performance tracking in all the Trust’s schools

He started working at Hornbeam Academy in 2016 as Acting Deputy Head and later became Deputy Principal before taking on the role of Data and Performance.

He has 18 years of teaching experience both in mainstream and SEN, he worked in a EBD Unit for 9 years before joining Hornbeam Academy.

Mielie has a BA degree in Psychology and Tourism as well as a Higher Educational Diploma in Teaching.
